去る5月1日付けニューヨークタイムズでは、「The Right Lessons From Chernobyl（チェルノブイリの正しい教訓）」と題する社説が掲載された。5月26日付けの電気事業連合会HPでは、この社説に関する和訳全文が掲載されているので適宜参照されたい。
・原子力に危険が伴うのは事実だ。しかし過去に起こった原子力事故は、石炭、ガス、石油といった化石燃料の燃焼が地球に及ぼすダメージに遠く及ばない。
・二酸化炭素排出量の削減が喫緊の課題であり、また原子力エネルギーがその一端を担うべきことには疑いがないだろう。
The dangers of nuclear power are real, but the accidents that have occurred do not compare to the damage to the earth being inflicted by the burning of fossil fuels — coal, gas and oil.・・・ no doubt that reducing carbon emissions must be an urgent priority and that nuclear energy must be part of the mix.
・再生可能エネルギー源の活用への世界規模での取り組みが必要。ただし、これらが化石燃料全体に取って代わる日ははるか先であり、それまでは、原子力は大気中の温室効果ガスの増加に寄与しない貴重な発電手段であり続ける。
It leaves no doubt・・・ renewable sources to meet our ever-expanding needs for energy. But the time when these can replace all fossil and nuclear fuels is still far off, and in the meantime nuclear energy remains an important means of generating electricity without adding to the steadily increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
日本のマスコミは、いつになったら原子力の功罪を冷静に見るようになるのだろか。
そして、日本の政治は、いつになったらこうした論調を堂々と主張できるようになるだろうか。
